EMSTEEL Green Steel ™

Verified low-carbon steel, responsibly produced and ready to deliver.

Maxx Piling is proud to supply the UK and Ireland with EMSteel Z-section sheet piles, produced through one of the world’s most advanced, verified low-carbon steelmaking routes. Combining Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technology, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) melting, on-site carbon capture, and responsible sourcing, EMSteel sets a new benchmark for sustainable steel production without compromising on quality or performance.

Proven Low-Carbon Manufacturing

EMSteel’s production route – Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) → Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) → Hot Rolling is powered by certified renewable and low-carbon electricity, independently verified through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

This modern, low-emission pathway produces steel of exceptional purity and consistency, significantly reducing embodied carbon while maintaining outstanding structural performance.

Through its Environmental Product Declaration (EPD-IES-0016139), independently verified by SGS Italia SpA, EMSteel reports a cradle-to-gate Global Warming Potential (A1–A3) of 704 kg CO₂e per tonne.

Beyond this verified baseline, EMSteel operates the region’s first large-scale carbon-capture system, capturing around 800 000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The captured gas is compressed and piped directly to a permanent storage facility as part of the Al Reyadah CCUS project, the world’s first commercial carbon-capture system applied to steel production.

Because current EPD standards (EN 15804 +A2 / ISO 14044) only credit emissions within the manufacturer’s operational boundary, this captured CO₂ is not yet included in the published figure. When accounted for, the effective embodied carbon falls to approximately 350kg CO₂e per tonne, placing EMSteel among the cleanest structural-steel producers globally.

✳️ Looking ahead: International EPD rules are expected to evolve by 2026, allowing verified carbon capture and storage to be recognised within the product boundary. When adopted, EMSteel’s next EPD update will reflect its true net-low-carbon performance.

All Z-sections are produced in grade S430 as standard, providing higher yield strength, excellent weldability, and reliable performance in both temporary and permanent applications.

Certified Sustainability and Responsible Sourcing

EMSteel holds some of the world’s most respected sustainability and quality certifications, demonstrating full transparency and accountability across its supply chain:

  • ResponsibleSteel™ Core Site Certification – first steel producer in the MENA region to achieve this global benchmark for responsible environmental, social, and governance performance.
  • BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certification – ensuring ethical sourcing, traceability, and compliance across every stage of production.
  • ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management System Certification – confirming continuous environmental performance improvement.
  • ISO 50001:2018 – Energy Management System Certification – for efficient and monitored energy use across production processes.
  • ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Health & Safety Management System – promoting safe and sustainable operations.
  • MSCI ESG Rating: AA (2024) – recognising EMSteel as a global leader in environmental, social and governance performance.
  • World Steel Association “Steel Sustainability Champion” (2024 & 2025) – awarded for verified progress in decarbonisation, circularity, and transparency.

Together, these certifications confirm that EMSteel operates to the highest global standard of sustainability, responsibility, and operational excellence.

Future Pathways – Hydrogen and Net Zero

EMSteel is actively pioneering next-generation steelmaking technology as part of its Net Zero 2050 strategy.

Its roadmap includes:

  • A green-hydrogen DRI pilot in partnership with Masdar, replacing natural gas with hydrogen and cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 95%.
  • Ongoing expansion of carbon-capture capacity beyond 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
  • Transition to 100% renewable electricity across all operations.
  • Continued optimisation of EAF energy efficiency and circular scrap integration.

This proactive approach ensures measurable progress towards fully decarbonised steelmaking, turning ambition into proven action.
